TIPS: Do-It-Yourself: Mirrors Cleaning mirrors requires a higher standard of care than most general cleaning because scratches, dirt, or damage to the mirror surface or the reflective coating show up easily and may reflect badly on you (so to speak). Following are cleaning recommendations: 1. Avoid harsh commercial cleaning solutions that may contain abrasives, or high acid or alkali content. SUGGESTED: Mild household cleaners in one of three types: - 5-10% Alcohol-based solutions (such as Windex); - Ammonia Based (beware of alkali content); or - 5% vinegar solutions. 2. Avoid dirty or gritty rags, abrasive paper or cloth, and scrapers. SUGGESTED: Soft, clean, cloth or cloth-like papers. 3. Avoid spilling cleaning solutions over the edge of the mirrors - this might damage the reflective coating. SUGGESTED: Apply cleaning solution to the rag, rather than directly onto the mirror. Use a dry towel to wipe around the edges after cleaning. |
