TIPS: Self-Help: Glass Cracks DON'T CRACK UNDER THE HEAT Summer heat can cause small cracks in your windows to spread. This is especially true of non-safety glass (often called "plate glass" or "annealed glass"). Rapid heat changes cause the glass to expand and contract. This stress causes the weakened cracked glass to break further. Cracked glass is a safety hazard and an invitation for thieves to "finish the job" of breaking through the window. WHAT TO DO. Inspect for cracks in your windows and replace cracked glass while it is still secure and in place. Consider upgrading display cases and storefront windows to safety glass (either tempered or laminated) which is designed to withstand greater heat than plain glass. THE MOST VULNERABLE LOCATIONS: areas with wide temperature ranges in a day (e.g. the southwest). Additional hazard: store locations with heat retaining window film over non-safety glass (the film can cause the glass to heat up quickly.). |
